Sudha Chandran spoke about one of the most defining chapters of her life, from losing her leg when she was 16 to her return to the stage with a powerful three-hour Bharatanatyam concert. In a recent conversation, the actress and dancer reflected on the pain, resilience and the moment she realized she was truly back.
“It was a choice between life and my legs.”
Recalling the incident that changed everything, Sudha said that she was not heading to the competition, as many assumed. “I was returning from our Kuldivta temple when the accident happened. It is not that I lost my leg immediately, but due to complications and medical negligence, after 25 days, a decision had to be made – life or leg,” she told Bollywood Bubble. She was only 16 years old at the time. “I was underage, so I couldn’t even make that decision. My parents chose life. When they told me, I said, ‘I don’t want to live.’ What am I going to do for a living?”That stage led her to question everything. “I kept asking – ‘What did I do wrong to deserve this?’ That’s when I started thinking about karma.”
“This girl will make history”
In the midst of the darkness, an unexpected moment gave her hope. “A family friend, who was a well-known astrologer, came to see me in the hospital. He told my mother: ‘This is just a short phase. “This girl is going to have great success and make history.”“At the time, I couldn’t believe it. I thought, ‘What can I do now?’ But it turned out that his words were true.”
“I couldn’t afford to go broke – for my parents’ sake.”
Speaking about her first performance after the accident, Sudha admitted that she was not afraid.
“I’m human. There was always doubt. Until that day, I kept telling myself I would do it, but that was also a defense mechanism.”Her biggest motivation was her parents. “Everything I did was for them. I saw their sacrifices. My only prayer was: Don’t let me fall. If I break, my parents will never recover.”She even remembers facing God. “I said don’t let my dignity be destroyed. If that happens, I won’t be able to face life.”
“It was a three-hour concert, and it was not easy at all.”
The comeback was not a small step, it was a complete Bharatanatyam concert. “It was not a 10-minute performance. It was a three-hour show, with intense footwork, abhinaya, and a 45-50-minute non-stop varnam based on the Ramayana.”Even when her mother asked her teacher to shorten the performance, he refused. “He said, ‘Whatever she was doing before the accident, she is going to do now.’ That became his challenge as well.”

Sudha Chandran on Doree: Walking on men in the promo was very emotionally difficult
“There were 1,000 people… I was not prepared.”
Sudha asked her family to keep the audience small. “But when I arrived, it was an all-house show – about 1,000 people, with many standing around. I asked, ‘Who invited them all?’ And my mother said, ‘Don’t think about it. Just go and perform.’Standing between her wings, she felt nerves tense. “Those butterflies…they’re always there.”Even today, she embraces that sentiment. “Butterflies are a very good sign. For any actor or artist, it is important to feel them.”
“When they said, ‘Welcome back Sudha,’ I didn’t look back.”
The turning point came the moment she got on stage. “When I walked in and heard the audience saying in unison: ‘Welcome back, Sudha’, after that I never looked back.”She performed each verse without stopping. “I don’t remember how one element ended and the next began. It was only when I performed the mangalam that I realized I had done it.”
“My mother stood there for three hours.”
The first person she looked for was her mother. “She was standing in the wings, not moving for three hours.
“She was crying tears of joy.”Then came the moment she cherished the most. “I was looking for my father. He was sitting in the back. When he came to me, he touched my feet.”For Sudha, this gesture remains unparalleled. “All the awards I received on one hand, and that moment on the other. This is the biggest award of my life. I will cherish it forever.”
