Ameesha Patel has revealed her family’s close ties with Indira Gandhi, who visited her for the first time when she was a newborn, and even set the date for her parents’ wedding. She highlighted the strong political influence of her grandfather Rajni Patel, noting his close association with Indira Gandhi and his key role within the Congress Party.
Amisha Patel recently spoke about her family’s long-standing ties with Indira Gandhi, revealing that the former Prime Minister was the first to visit her when she was born and she shares a close relationship with her family on both the personal and political fronts.
She added in an interview that this connection existed even before she was born.

Speaking to Bollywood Bubble, Patel said: “When I was born at Breach Candy Hospital, the first person to come to see me was Indira Gandhi.” She also reflected on her grandfather, famous lawyer Rajni Patel, and highlighted his strong presence in political circles. “My grandfather, lawyer Rajni Patel, was a very famous lawyer. Then he entered politics. His childhood mentor was Jawaharlal Nehru. When he entered politics, he first joined the Communist Party and then moved to the Congress,” she shared.
During his time in Congress, Indira Gandhi was his closest aide. He was her chief advisor. He has also served as Congressional Treasurer and Speaker of Congress. There was no major step that Indira Gandhi could take without discussing the matter with my grandfather or taking his opinion. My grandfather also raised money for many Prime Ministers across India.

In the same interaction, Patel also mentioned that her parents’ wedding date was fixed based on Indira Gandhi’s convenience.
“Indira Gandhi also fixed my parents’ wedding date. Their horoscopes didn’t match, so she was asked when she would be available, and based on her dates, my parents’ wedding day was finalized.” She went on to highlight another contribution of her grandfather, saying, “My grandfather built the Nehru Planetarium in Worli in honor of his mentor Jawaharlal Nehru.
“There is a very deep connection with the Gandhi family,” she added, emphasizing their close professional ties: “My grandfather was a member of the Congress Party, and he had a very deep professional connection with Indira Gandhi.”
Rajni Patel’s political legacy and influence
Rajni Patel, a prominent lawyer and senior Congress leader, was seen as one of the most respected legal figures in Mumbai. Trained in London as a solicitor, he went on to build a successful practice and was part of the defense team in the high-profile 1959 KM Nanavati case. He began his political journey with the communist movement before joining the communist movement

In the late 1960s, he shared a close equation with Indira Gandhi. Known for his sharp legal acumen and political influence, he later became the president of the Mumbai Pradesh Congress Committee and was seen as an influential force within the party.
