Mexico announced on Saturday that the two American agents who died after an operation to dismantle a suspected Mexican drug laboratory did not have permission to carry out operations of this kind. The April 19 incident in the northern state of Chihuahua, which also resulted in the deaths of two Mexican officials, led to new diplomatic disputes between the United States and Mexico and increased pressure on President Claudia Sheinbaum. The Mexican Security Ministry said in a statement that immigration records showed that one of the agents entered the country as a “visitor” while the other used a “diplomatic passport.” “Neither of them had official accreditation to participate in operational activities within the national territory.”Many American media reported that the two Americans, whose identities were not revealed, worked for the CIA. The US ambassador to Mexico said they were employees of the US embassy. The Ministry of Security statement indicated that Mexican law prohibits foreign agents from participating in operations on Mexican territory.
