Assembly elections in India 2026 | Key points
Assembly elections in India are held in the states of Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Besides, bypolls are also being conducted for eight constituencies in six states. Assam has a total of 126 seats, Kerala 140, Tamil Nadu 234, Bengal 294 and Puducherry 30.
– Voting for the Assam, Kerala and Puducherry assembly elections was held in a single phase on April 9. Tamil Nadu also voted in one phase on April 23 along with the first phase polling in West Bengal, where the second and final round is scheduled to be held on April 29.
The results of the assembly elections and bypolls for eight constituencies in six states will be announced on May 4, the day the Election Commission counts the votes.
– As per the Election Commission of India (ECI) schedule, five seats in Goa (Punda), Karnataka (Baghalkot, Devanagiri), Nagaland (Koridhan), and Tripura (Dharmanagar) were voted on April 9, while three seats in Gujarat (Umrith) and Maharashtra (Rahori, Baramati) were voted on April 23.
-Tamil Nadu and West Bengal first phase witnessed record voting percentage on April 23, with turnout standing at 85.15 per cent and 92.88 per cent respectively. EC officials said on Saturday that no re-poll has been recommended at any of the polling stations in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu where the Assembly elections were held on Thursday.

2026 Elections Live Updates: Ten of the 152 constituencies in West Bengal that voted on April 23 are likely to see a decline in turnout in absolute terms compared to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, although the decline in just one constituency is likely to be more than the margin of victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, according to HT’s preliminary calculations.

2026 Elections Live Updates: No re-poll ordered in Bengal’s Tamil Nadu, say EC officials
2026 Elections Live Updates: No re-poll has been recommended at any of the polling stations in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu where the Assembly elections were held on Thursday, EC officials said on Saturday.
While all 234 Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu went to voting in one phase, 152 seats in West Bengal went to voting in the first phase.
The remaining 142 seats are scheduled to go to the polls on April 29.
Poll commission officials had earlier cited rules to state that if the webcast at any of the polling stations was “deliberately” disrupted, a re-polling order would be issued.
