Helena Bonham Carter exits season 4 of The White Lotus; The role will be rewritten and recast amid the ongoing filming schedule

Helena Bonham Carter has exited the fourth season of The White Lotus. News of her exit comes as production begins on the new season, which takes place in France along the French Riviera. The next installment in the hit series, created by Mike White, is also said to be screening during the Cannes Film Festival, raising concern over the sudden change in casting.

Carter reportedly began filming the scenes when the creative team decided that the character, as originally conceived, required major changes.

As Deadline reports, the role Carter was originally set to play will now be rewritten and recast, according to an official statement from HBO.“As filming began on Season 4 of The White Lotus, it became clear that the character Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not get along once on set,” an HBO spokesperson said in a statement.

The role was later rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks. HBO, the producers and Mike White are sad they won’t be able to work with her, but they remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.

The move is a rare departure from the series’ previous casting decisions. White is also known for his meticulous casting process and hands-on involvement in writing and directing each episode.

Carter was also reportedly the top choice for the role and was among the first actors contacted for the season. The cast for season 4 includes Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Ari Graynor, Alexander Ludwig, Chris Messina, AJ Michalka, Kumail Nanjiani, and Nadja Tereshkiewicz, among others. Additional cast members include Chloe Bennet, Sandra Bernhard, Heather Graham, Max Greenfield, Frida Gustafsson, Rosie Perez, Ben Schnitzer, and Laura Smit.Despite the setback, production is expected to continue on season 4, and a new cast member is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
