Kajol talks about 3 years of “irrational fighting and conflict” with Nyssa, and shares how she repaired their relationship: “I stopped giving instructions”

Kajol speaks candidly about raising Nysa amid social media pressures, and recalls early clashes when Nysa turned 12. I turned to calmer, more rational conversations, and learned to listen rather than direct. After three difficult years, their bond was strengthened through long conversations. Kajol credits this change with making their relationship “good today.”

Kajol recently shared insights into her journey as a mother, and opened up about the evolving relationship she shares with her daughter Nysa, amid the challenges of growing up in a world ruled by social media.

Nysa, Kajol and Ajay Devgn’s eldest daughter, has a younger brother, Yug. During a recent interview, Kajol spoke about how she deals with the massive exposure and societal pressures that young girls face today, and whether Nyssa looks to her for advice. Reflecting on their journey, she talked about the different stages that helped form their bond.

Kajol remembers her early struggles with her daughter, Nysa

Speaking to Lilly Singh, the actress said: “I have a lot of conversations with her. I talk to her.

I talk her through things. It’s a relationship we had to build. And we built it because of the simple fact that we… I mean the hormones hit and she was 12 years old. And so it was, we were everywhere. We would fight and be irrational sometimes. We were irrational sometimes.”

Kajol talks about changing her style of raising children

Kajol also spoke about the conscious shift she made in her parenting style, explaining how she chose to deal with situations more calmly and thoughtfully.

Kajol shared, “I stood up and said, I am an adult. I have to be a little more rational. And so I decided that I will not fight with her so much. I will try to talk to her as much as I can. Talk to her so that she starts listening to me and working with her. And so we both struggled for about three years.”

We were both like, I’m not listening to you. I don’t want to talk to you. But eventually, they became conversations, long conversations.

Kajol learns to listen to her daughter

She went on to say that things started to change when she moved from giving instructions to just listening. She shared: “I realized it was more about sitting down and listening to her. It wasn’t about talking so much. It was just about giving her space to speak for herself and be heard. That made a huge difference. Once she realized it wasn’t about trying to tell her how to do things. She was going to figure it out on her own.”

She just needed me to sit there and listen to her as long as I could. So that was my biggest learning as a parent. So touch wood, we’re fine today.
