Mark Ruffalo, Ben Stiller, and Zachary Levi react to the WB and Paramount merger; They warn of fewer opportunities and fewer jobs

Warner Bros. shareholders agreed. Discovery has agreed to sell to Paramount Global and Skydance Media, removing a major hurdle to a proposed $110 billion merger that could reshape the global entertainment industry.

However, not everyone is happy with this merger. The deal, described as a “hostile takeover,” brings an end to a takeover battle that will create a media giant with major assets including CNN, CBS, HBO and Nickelodeon. The combined entity will also include some of Hollywood’s biggest franchises, such as Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, DC Universe, Mission: Impossible, and SpongeBob SquarePants.Under this agreement, AFP reports, Paramount will pay $31 per share in cash for all of its Warner Bros. stock. Discovery is listed, meaning the shares are valued at US$81 billion. Including Paramount’s debt, the total value of the deal brings to approximately $110 billion. However, the merger sparked significant opposition within the entertainment industry. A growing number of high-profile figures, including Robert De Niro, Sofia Coppola and Holly Hunter, have signed an open letter criticizing the deal.

The letter has received 4,194 signatures since its launch on April 13, including more than 75 Oscar winners and nominees, according to organizers.“The result will be fewer opportunities for creators, fewer jobs across the production ecosystem, higher costs, and fewer choices for audiences in the United States and around the world. Alarmingly, this merger would reduce the number of major film studios in the United States to just four,” the letter warns.

Mark Ruffalo

who has been very vocal about the merger, took it upon himself to write, “HBO was the only broadcaster willing to produce ‘I Know This Much Is True’. Extremely difficult material. We won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for it. Taking away one streaming service, or combining two, would have made producing ‘I Know This Much Is True’ impossible.”He added: “Two men, both with a very narrow understanding of the world, who are close friends with the most anti-First Amendment, anti-press president in history, who censors science, climate change, anything to do with equality, and is currently in the process of killing American citizens, waging a catastrophic illegal war, while supporting genocide, will have the largest concentration of news and entertainment in the history of the world. What could go wrong? This merger would never happen without Ellison’s friendship and the support of their Dear Leader Trump. Acting on This is a fairly normal act of madness. It will be remembered as such. Starting a business with $78 billion in debt is not a winning bet, a lot of people will lose their jobs, a lot of important stories will never be told, and two men will make decisions about what you watch or don’t watch, and they will try to control the way you think. In response to his post, his fellow actor and director

Ben Stiller

He tweeted: “There are already very few buyers. Original ideas and non-legacy IP are very difficult to implement by a large studio or network. Sifting through the choices reduces the chances of getting new voices and diverse perspectives into what we all had the opportunity to see. It’s already been a challenge for years, and a merger will only make it worse.”New York Mayor Zahran Mamdani also tweeted: “This merger is three times as bad for New Yorkers. Thousands of jobs are at risk here in the city. Broadcast bills rise as competition disappears. Two of the most powerful media companies in America under one roof, deciding what you watch and what you hear. Today, with a vote by shareholders of Warner Bros. and Paramount, New York City is on record: This merger must be stopped.”

Zachary Levi

He wrote, “Mr. Mayor, where was all the anxiety and anger when it was Netflix that was going to buy WB? I don’t recall you saying anything about that. Did I miss that message?”

However, Ruffalo supported the New York mayor, saying: “This is a disaster for consumers and New York’s emerging film industry. Thank you for shining a light on this issue @mayormamdani. Now is the time for @RobBonta @TrishJames and other state aides to step up and protect American jobs, artists and consumers to #BlockTheMerger.”Despite shareholder approval, the deal still faces regulatory scrutiny in the United States and Europe. It may also face legal challenges, including potential lawsuits from state attorneys general seeking to block the merger.
