Fifty years after the sci-fi film’s release, environmental themes have been addressed Logan’s run It helped the film prolong its cultural life.
Director Michael Anderson’s dystopian film was based on authors William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson’s 1967 novel that MGM had unsuccessfully tried for many years to adapt to the big screen. Set in the 23rd century, the film focuses on a hedonistic society where the remaining humans live in a domed city run by artificial intelligence. A crystal mounted in each resident’s left hand flashes from red to black when they turn thirty, at which point they are killed through a ritual called “Carousel.”
Michael York, known for films such as nightclubstarring him as Logan 5, a police officer who tracks down “contestants” for refusing to participate in the Carousel — until he, too, finds himself threatened with termination. Jenny Agutter and Richard Jordan rounded out the cast. After other screenwriters raved about it, David Zelaj Goodman’s script finally helped pull the adaptation out of development hell thanks to raising the maximum age from the book’s 21, thus expanding the pool of potential stars, including the 34-year-old Yorke.

Not only did the film spawn a short-lived CBS spinoff, but a potential remake from producer Joel Silver had been in development for decades, with directors like Joseph Kosinski, Nicolas Winding Refn, and Simon Kinberg on board. In 1999, Anderson called Logan’s run “A piece I am very proud of.”
