Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as a “friend” who offers help from time to time, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday said he does not need “such friends”.

“Akhilesh ji is my friend, so he helps me sometimes,” Modi had noted during his Lok Sabha speech last week on the now-rejected Constitution Amendment Bill linked to women’s reservation.

The Prime Minister made the light-hearted comment after he thanked SP MP Dharmendra for mentioning that he is from the OBC community and emphasizing that it is his duty to take care of everyone’s interests.

Asked about the comment at a press conference here, Akhilesh Yadav said: “Yes, it is a very important question, but our microphone has been switched off (in the Assembly). We have said that we do not need such friends.”

He said that only the Prime Minister could clarify the assistance he was referring to.

“Regarding the request for help, if you ask the prime minister about the help I provided, only he can answer that. As far as I know, nothing like that has happened,” the former prime minister said.

Responding to a question, Yadav warned people to remain vigilant, alleging that the BJP may resort to extreme measures in the face of defeat.

“I want to warn everyone to remain alert and cautious. When the BJP loses, it can do anything. It is now heading towards defeat, and once it is gone, it may never come back. This fear worries them the most,” he said.
