A Canadian woman was shot dead and 13 others were wounded in a shooting at the pyramids of Teotihuacan, an archaeological site north of Mexico City, after a gunman opened fire on tourists on Monday, authorities said.Six people were injured by gunshots, while seven others were injured in the ensuing panic. Among those wounded by bullets were a Canadian woman, a Colombian woman, a child, a Brazilian, and two Americans. Agence France-Presse reported that among those injured in the stampede were a Russian, a Colombian, a Brazilian, and four Americans.Cristobal Castañeda, Mexico State’s security minister, said the gunman, whose nationality was unknown, later died by suicide after the attack.The shooting occurred around midday at the Pyramid of the Moon, a 45-meter-high structure that visitors are allowed to climb. Videos posted on social media showed the attacker shooting intermittently from part of the top of the pyramid as tourists took cover or fled. In one of the video clips, a voice can be heard saying: “Someone opens fire on us, be careful of friends, send security.”
Authorities recovered an unused firearm, knife and ammunition from the scene and evacuated the visitors.
Police and National Guard members were deployed after the incident.Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said: “What happened today in Teotihuacan hurts us deeply,” and called for a comprehensive investigation. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand called the attack a “horrific act of armed violence.”The site, which is more than 2,000 years old, attracts more than 1.8 million visitors annually and is among the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico.
