Iran plans to tighten its grip on the Strait of Hormuz by imposing new transit fees to regulate the movement of ships through the route. But the country ruled out imposing any “traditional fees” on ships passing through it.Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesman for Iran’s National Security Committee, told Al Jazeera that a law is being drafted to bring charges related to “securing the strait.” He added that ships will not be allowed to pass except after coordination with the Iranian authorities.

Rezaei also stressed that although “hostile military ships” would not be allowed, especially from the United States and Israel, “friendly” ships could pass, but only with prior coordination.
