However, even as he presented himself as a peace broker, Trump used a more aggressive tone toward Iran.
He warned that Washington might launch a military escalation if an agreement is not reached before the current ceasefire ends next week.“If we don’t get a deal, we’re going to get it differently — much more unfriendly,” Trump said, adding that the US naval blockade of Iran would remain in place and that military action could resume if the talks collapsed. He said that negotiations with Tehran will continue over the weekend, reiterating that preventing Iran from possessing nuclear weapons remains the top priority of the United States.
Trump also pointed to developments in West Asia, including a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon and claims about the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, as signs of progress. But Iran backed down from these allegations. Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf said that passage through the Strait of Hormuz will remain tightly controlled by Tehran and subject to its authorization, adding that decisions regarding the waterway will be determined “on the ground, not on social media.”A new round of talks between the United States and Iran is expected to be held in Islamabad on Monday, with delegations likely to arrive the day before, according to reports.
