Boston Marathon 2026 weather forecast: Cooler temperatures, steady winds and a near-perfect race forecast
The 130th Boston Marathon will take place on Monday, April 20, continuing a tradition dating back to 1897 and remaining the oldest annual marathon in the world. The race is held every year on Patriots Day, and follows the designated route from Hopkinton to Boston, covering a distance of 26.2 miles and passing through eight Massachusetts towns before ending on Boylston Street in Copley Square. More than 30,000 runners are expected to participate this year, representing more than 130 countries and all 50 US states. The event also relies on about 10,000 volunteers organized by the Boston Athletic Association (BAA), with preparations already underway across the city, including athletes arriving at Logan Airport and setting up the final course. The marathon continues to operate on a scale that goes beyond the race itself. Analysts estimate that the project will generate more than $509 million for the Greater Boston area, while 193 non-profit organizations are participating through the official charitable program.Through Bank of America’s Boston Marathon Official Charitable Program, BAA provides advocacy engagements to select nonprofit organizations. These organizations use those entries to recruit contestants who commit to raising money for their causes.
The weather forecast indicates stable and cooler conditions
According to forecasts, including CBS weather reports, conditions for the 2026 race are expected to favor runners. Temperatures at the start line in Hopkinton are expected to be in the low to mid 40s F (about 4°C to 7°C) during the morning.
By the time racers arrive in Boston, temperatures are expected to climb into the low to high 50s F (about 10°C to 13°C), with most of the late mornings and afternoons remaining in the mid to upper 40s (about 8°C to 9°C). No significant rain or snow is expected.

Conditions are also expected to remain consistent throughout the course. Some years, runners encounter variable conditions near Boston, but the pattern is unexpected this time.
Wind remains the main variable
Winds will be present throughout the race, and are expected to be northwesterly between 10 and 25 mph (about 16 to 40 km/h). The direction of the wind means that it will move across the course and not directly against the racers. Officials continue to monitor its strength and direction as the frontal system moves across eastern Massachusetts on Sunday evening, which will determine final conditions. The marathon is held alongside other events throughout Boston.
The Boston Red Sox are scheduled to host the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park at 11:10 a.m., adding activity throughout the city on Race Day.
Final preparations before race day
Athletes have already begun arriving in Boston, with volunteers and organizers handling logistics before Monday. For many racers, the race represents the end of long training cycles, while for the city, it remains one of the largest annual events, combining elite competition, mass participation and fundraising under a single event structure. Final weather conditions will be confirmed closer to race day, but the current forecast indicates stable and cooler conditions along the track.
