GUWAHATI: Three people have been arrested and the licenses of six LPG distributors have been suspended since March in Assam to curb hoarding, illegal diversion and violations of standard operating procedures, a senior official said on Friday.

But he stressed that the supply of liquefied natural gas cylinders and local petroleum products in the state is “completely normal.”
“Supplies of domestic LPG cylinders and petroleum products, including petrol and diesel, are quite normal in Assam,” Nitin Bhatnagar, CEO and state head of IndianOil, said at a press conference here.
There are currently 1,737 petroleum retail outlets in Assam, along with nine supply sites/depots in operation.
He pointed out that 2,935 kiloliters of gasoline and 3,670 kiloliters of diesel are provided daily through retail outlets, adding that sufficient stock equivalent to 21 days of gasoline and 46 days of diesel is currently available.
“All OMC’s retail outlets are operating normally, and there are no restrictions on sales. Nozzle sales are in line with normal consumption levels in the January-March 2026 period, indicating stable demand,” Bhatnagar said.
Regarding LPG supplies, he said about 93,000 consumers are being served through 604 distributors and seven bottling plants in the state.
On an average, 1,39,000 packages are delivered daily and a backlog of around 4.28 days is cleared as per the scheduled booking list.
The official also said that in order to curb hoarding and illegal diversion, OMC officials, in collaboration with state government employees, have conducted 319 inspections since last month.
During this period, three people were arrested, one FIR was registered, and 274 cylinders were seized.
Action has also been taken against OMC LPG distributors for non-compliance with standard operating procedures, including digital protocol for booking and delivery acknowledgment confirmation.
Bhatnagar added that show cause notices have been served to 88 OMC LPG distributors, of which six have been suspended so far.
In order to promote digitization in LPG services, 84 per cent of bookings are now made online, compared to just 49 per cent two months ago, the official said.
Compliance with the DAC was ensured in 72 percent of cases, compared to 37 percent two months ago.
The number of daily PMUY packages in the state was about 44,595 in March, compared to an average of 62,000 in February.
“To support low-consumption families, migrant workers, students and others, 5 kg LPG cylinders are being provided,” he said.
