Steven Spielberg took the stage at CinemaCon for the first time in his career to promote his upcoming global release, Disclosure day.
After an introduction by star Colman Domingo, the director received a standing ovation from the annual movie theater owners conference in Las Vegas on Wednesday. Spielberg accepted the Motion Picture Association’s America250 Award from the group’s president, Charles Rifkin, in celebration of the director’s work that embraces the nation’s wonders.
“I haven’t done a Western yet, and this is next,” the 79-year-old director said. He noted that his debut on the CinemaCon stage was great: “I promise this won’t be the last.”
He recalled his first visit to the cinema, saying: “Nothing could compete with sitting in the first three rows of the Cinema Palace, watching Cecil B. DeMille’s epic in Technicolor. Nothing will ever be the same.”
“Sometimes, to me, it feels like a cage battle between the small screen and the big screen,” Spielberg admitted. He noted that the theater experience had “taken a hit” due to Covid but added: “There was reason for hope.” He went on to praise projects like Chloé Zhao’s Hamnetwho considered Spielberg as a producer.
Afterwards, the director sat on stage with Domingo to discuss show business, as Spielberg recalls inviting his childhood friends to his parents’ house to screen famous films. “I made money by charging 12 cents for popcorn,” he joked.
Turn to Disclosure dayThe director explained that he had long been fascinated by the possibility of extraterrestrial life. “I’ve been curious since I was a little kid about what happens in the night sky, and what happens in the daytime sky,” Spielberg said. He remembered that his father used to tell him about “advanced civilizations” that did not exist on Earth.
