Tensions erupted in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Tuesday after protesters intercepted three private four-wheelers carrying armed security personnel in civilian clothes, leading to clashes that left 21 civilians injured, police said, adding that five protesters were arrested.

“At around 1.30 pm, while the security team was on its way near Thennongi, Bishnupur district, the movement of the security team was obstructed by local people after malicious and unconfirmed rumors were spread regarding the identity and purpose of the individuals. A mob gathered and stopped the vehicles of the security forces. The situation escalated when some members turned violent, damaging two vehicles with security personnel and setting them on fire,” the police said in a statement.

Following the incident, two of the three vehicles were set on fire by the mob, which some locals claimed were carrying Kuki militants wearing civilian clothes. Several teams of Manipur Police rushed to the area to control the agitated mob, leading to a clash with the protesters.

Police said that at least 21 demonstrators were slightly injured in the clash, and five demonstrators were arrested.

The district magistrate imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, from 5 pm till further orders, restricting the movement of people.
