Bora, who rose to prominence during the historic Assam movement, filed his nomination from this seat to record a historic ‘triple’ win. Its primary support comes from the indigenous Assamese communities, particularly the tea community, the Gorkhas, the Mishenge and the Karbi tribes of the Gateway district of Kaziranga.

5 Key Facts about Atul Bora

  • For the 2026 elections, his party, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), is contesting 26 seats as part of the ruling alliance. This maintains the party’s footprint for 2021, strengthening its position as the key regional partner within the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.
  • The alliance with the BJP has been strengthened after weeks of intense internal negotiations on select seats in upper Assam like Chabua Lahawal. The final seat-sharing agreement was closed ahead of the nomination deadline, ensuring a united front against the Congress-led opposition.
  • Voters support him because of his dual identity as a seasoned official and regional trustee. He is credited with revitalizing the agricultural sector in the state and is trusted by the “indigenous” voter base to push for the implementation of the Assam Accord while ensuring that the state benefits from “twin-engine” growth.
  • Born in Borahi Gaon, Golaghat, to a family from the Chotia community, Bora’s path was nurtured in student activism. He rose through the ranks as head of the party The All Assam Students Union (AASU), is transforming from a controversial protester into a sophisticated political leader with degrees in political science and law.
  • In contrast to his early struggles, such as a third-place finish in 2011, Borah has succeeded in turning Bokakhat into a fortress, winning by more than 45,000 votes in the last cycle. For the April 9, 2026 polls, it is taking advantage of massive ‘Jana Ashirwad Yatras’ with Prime Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to combat domestic issues such as flood erosion and road infrastructure.
