JERUSALEM/CAIRO (Reuters) – The peace council formed by Donald Trump has received only a small portion of the $17 billion pledged for Gaza, preventing the US president from moving forward with his plan for the future of the torn Palestinian enclave, sources told Reuters. Ten days before the US-Israeli attacks on Iran plunged the region into war, Trump hosted a conference in Washington that saw Gulf Arab states pledge billions of dollars to manage and rebuild Gaza. One of the sources, a person with direct knowledge of the peace council’s operations, said that of the ten countries that pledged money, only three countries – the United Arab Emirates, Morocco and the United States itself – contributed funding.
The source said that the financing so far is less than $1 billion, but did not provide further details. The Iran war “affected everything,” the source said, exacerbating previous financing difficulties. The plan provides for the large-scale rebuilding of the coastal sector after the disarmament of the Palestinian Hamas movement. In a statement posted on social media on Friday, the Peace Council denied that it had funding problems.(This is a Reuters report)
