A court has rejected Kim Kardashian’s request to keep details of her $6 million settlement with Ray J behind closed doors.

The deal relates to harsh legal criticism exchanged between the two sides after Kardashian, in one of the episodes of the series Kardashians In 2022, Ray J was accused of trying to blackmail her with a second sex tape and raping her while she was sleeping. He threatened to sue the reality TV star turned activist and businesswoman, which led to the settlement.

Last year, Kardashian and Ray J, whose real name is Ray Norwood Jr., reignited their legal battle when the singer suggested in a live video that his sexual partner and her mother were involved in an illegal criminal enterprise and would be charged by the government. Kardashian filed a lawsuit for defamation, accusing him of trying to exploit her fame. The lawsuit references a moment in the TMZ documentary about Sean “Diddy” Combs when Ray J is heard saying, “If you told me the Kardashians were accused of extortion, I might believe it.” “The feds are coming, there’s nothing I can do about it. He’s worse than Diddy,” he later said in a video widely shared online.

Kardashian’s lawsuit resulted in a joint complaint from Ray J, who said she violated terms of the 2023 settlement that barred either side from discussing the sex tape. Kardashian immediately moved to seal the court documents submitted by the singer, arguing that they were strictly confidential.

In a March 30 ruling, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephen Ellis found that the right of public access mattered more than Kardashian’s privacy. He concluded that Kardashian “has provided no admissible evidence that disclosing the settlement agreement and its terms would cause them any harm.”

The two sides have a long history. They dated in the 1990s, with the couple leaking a sex tape that launched Kardashian’s career. In a court statement, Ray J said he “fell out with the entire Kardashian family” after his ex-girlfriend’s family racked up $850,000 in charges on his credit cards, prompting another lawsuit.
