“At approximately 11 a.m., other officers heard a gunshot and found him lying on the ground. His rifle was on his body, and a bullet magazine was found nearby,” officers said.

Visible evidence points to a case of suicide, though further investigations are underway, Dhemaji Police Senior Inspector Swapnanil Deka said.

“He was alone at the time of the incident and the gun was found on his body. Other evidence also suggests that this was a case of suicide, but we cannot come to a final conclusion without a proper investigation,” Deka told HT.

Deka said the deceased was initially taken to a local government hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

He added: “Once we receive the autopsy report, the matter will be clearer. The motive behind this act will be investigated comprehensively.”

According to police records, the constable joined the police force in 2015 and served as Lance Naik.

The body was then sent for post-mortem and her family members were informed, police said.

In recent years, several similar incidents have been reported across Assam. In October last year, 41-year-old Lance Naik shot himself with his rifle inside the barracks in the Cachar area. On September 10, a 36-year-old constable of Assam Police allegedly shot himself with his rifle at the residence of Dima Hasao District Commissioner.
