Meryl Streep says she's 'thrilled' to cast older women in major film roles: 'I think there's something unusual about this movie'

Meryl Streep is thrilled to reprise her iconic role as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada 2, highlighting the dearth of substantive roles for older women in Hollywood. The sequel, due for release on May 1, sees Priestley navigating the changing media landscape and taking on Emily Blunt’s character. The film promises a powerful portrayal of a seasoned executive.

Meryl Streep said she is “happy to cast” older women in lead roles when she returns as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada 2. Speaking at a press conference in Japan with Anne Hathaway, Streep said the role stands out because older women rarely get that kind of space in mainstream films.

The sequel brings back one of its most popular characters nearly 20 years after the 2006 original and is scheduled to hit theaters on May 1.

Why is the return of Meryl Streep’s The Devil Wears Prada 2 important?

According to People magazine, Streep, who will soon be 77, said: “I think there’s something unusual about this movie, because you don’t see many women who are almost 70 or 77 years old playing roles like that in any movie or under any circumstances.” Then she added: “So I am happy to act.”

Streep also talked about how older women are pushed to the side on screen. “Too often women over 50 disappear into the woodwork.

“Their interests and opinions are less valued in our culture,” she said, adding that it is encouraging to see such figures emerge with strength and importance.
