A 28-year-old man was found stabbed to death in his home in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district earlier this week, with police later uncovering an alleged murder plot involving his wife and her lover. The case, initially reported as a robbery, was solved within 36 hours, officials said Thursday.

The victim, Dev Krishna Purohit, was killed on Monday and Tuesday night at his residence in Gundikida Charan village, about 60 km from the district headquarters, news agency PTI reported.

Soon after the incident, his wife, Priyanka Purohit (25), approached the police claiming that unidentified assailants broke into their house, attacked her husband with a sharp weapon while holding her captive in another room, and then escaped with valuables.
However, police began to suspect foul play after noticing inconsistencies in her story.
Investigation uncovers an alleged conspiracy
Superintendent of Police Mayank Awasthi said further investigations point to planned murder. Priyanka, who has been married to Dev Krishna since she was 15, was reportedly unwilling to live with him after she moved into their marital home, leading to frequent arguments.

Police said she was in a relationship with a 32-year-old man, Kamlesh Purohit, a resident of Rajgarh. According to police, the two allegedly conspired to remove Dev Krishna, whom they viewed as an obstacle.
Police said the plan included hiring a hit man known as Surendra $1 lakh to carry out the murder.
The family claims a troubled marriage
NDTV reported that family members of the deceased said the marriage had been tense for a long time. His sister Jyoti reportedly claimed that Priyanka would often insult Dev Krishna, saying, “You are dark skinned… You don’t deserve me… I deserve someone better.” “Tum kaale ho (You are dark skinned), you don’t deserve me.”
Technical evidence reveals connections
Technical evidence, including mobile phone data, played a key role in unraveling the case. NDTV reported that call logs and other inputs proved that there was contact between Priyanka and Kamlesh around the time of the murder, raising further suspicions.

After interrogation, Priyanka eventually confessed to her role in the conspiracy, police said.
After the confession, the police arrested Priyanka and Kamlesh. Efforts are currently being made to trace and arrest the alleged hitman, Surendra, who is still at large.
