India on Wednesday welcomed the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, expressing its hope that the temporary truce will pave the way for lasting peace in West Asia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, in an official statement, that it has constantly called for an end to the escalation, stressing that “dialogue and diplomacy are necessary to bring an early end to the ongoing conflict.”

The government stressed the broader humanitarian and economic impact of the conflict, noting that it had caused “enormous suffering” and disrupted global energy supplies and trade networks.

India reiterated its long-standing position that a peaceful solution through diplomatic channels remains the only viable path forward in the region.

Highlighting the strategic importance of sea routes, the Middle East Airlines said it expects “unimpeded freedom of navigation and the flow of global trade” through the Strait of Hormuz.

The narrow waterway is an important artery for global oil shipments, and its disruption in recent weeks has caused volatility in energy markets around the world.

Ceasefire between Iran and the United States

The statement comes after the United States and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire aimed at stopping the escalation of hostilities and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump suspended the “bombing and attack” campaign against Iran, announced a two-week ceasefire, and said that the Iranian 10-point proposal is applicable.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the ten-point proposal would serve as a basis for negotiating a permanent agreement, while emphasizing that the United States had achieved most of its military goals.

“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan, in which they asked me to halt the destructive force that will be sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran’s agreement to the full, immediate and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack on Iran for two weeks. This will be a two-pronged action.” Ceasefire!” Trump said.

He added: “The reason for this is that we have already achieved and exceeded all military goals, and we are still very far from reaching a final agreement on long-term peace with Iran and peace in the Middle East. We have received a 10-point proposal from Iran, and we believe it is a practical basis to negotiate.”
