GUWAHATI: The three-week long campaigning for the April 9 elections to all 126 assembly constituencies in Assam ended on Tuesday.

Senior leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress Party toured the state to woo voters with promises during the election campaign.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Health Minister JP Nadda and BJP national president Nitin Nabin have visited Assam several times and spoken at election rallies and participated in roadshows to garner support for the saffron party and its allies in the NDA.

On the other hand, NCP chief Mallikarjun Kharge and senior party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra addressed several meetings to boost the prospects of their candidates and alliance partners.

Leaders from other parties like AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi visited the state to campaign for the All India United Democratic Front and JMM chief and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, whose party fielded 16 candidates, addressed more than a dozen meetings.

On Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed election meetings in Patharkandi, Hailakandi and Cachar while Congress president Kharji addressed a press conference in Guwahati.

722 candidates are competing in Assam, including 59 women. The state has 25.05 million eligible voters (12.53 million males, 12.52 million females and 318 third genders).

There are 642,314 voters in the 18-19 age group who are eligible to vote for the first time; There are 205,085 voters with disabilities, and 2,466 voters over the age of 100.

The state has 31,490 polling stations, 4,021 of which are run by all women and 15 run by people with disabilities.

The key seats in these elections are Jalukbari from where Prime Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is seeking re-election, Jorhat where Congress state unit president Gaurav Gogoi is a candidate and Sibsagar from where Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi is seeking a second term.
