Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is focused on bringing prosperity, self-reliance and global recognition to Assam in the coming years. He also compared the BJP’s performance over the past 10 years with the previous Congress rule, which targeted the opposition party over the MSP, illegal immigration, tribal status and election-related insurgency in the state.

Voting on all 126 House seats in the state is scheduled to take place on April 9, and the votes will be counted on May 4.

Addressing an election rally in Barpeta, the Prime Minister said: “The past 10 years of BJP rule in Assam were aimed at bringing peace and harmony, pulling the state out of difficulties and insecurity and protecting the identity of the state. The coming years will bring more prosperity and self-reliance and make the state recognized across the world.”

The Prime Minister said during Congress rule, the minimum support price (MSP) was for paddy $1,300 per quintal, but during BJP rule it increased to 1,300 per quintal $2,370. He said that during the Congress rule at the Center from 2004 to 2014, farmers across India received a total $4 Crore As MSP, this number has risen to $16 million crores between 2014 and 2024.

“Congress used to give dues meant for farmers to middlemen, but our government transfers the same directly to their bank accounts. Through Chief Minister Kisan Samman Nidhi, farmers in Assam have received more than $7500 Crores so far. When urea levels reached $3000 per bag worldwide, and we still provide it to our farmers at a subsidized price $He said 300.

Prime Minister Modi alleged that Congress has not treated tribals in the country well.

“The Congress has committed maximum injustice against the tribals of the country. The areas where the tribals reside were the poorest in the country and were devastated by bombs and violence… Our government has focused on prosperity and lasting peace in the tribal areas,” he added. He mentioned how peace agreements signed with rebel groups in the past 10 to 12 years have restored peace to most parts of the state. “Peace and prosperity have arrived in Assam after many decades and hence it is necessary to keep Congress away (from the state),” he said.

Modi accused the Congress of furthering the enemy’s agenda through surgical strikes and air strikes. “During Operation Sindoor, our Pakistani forces subdued Pakistan within hours, but Congress sang the song written and composed by Pakistan,” he said.

The Prime Minister accused the Congress of encouraging illegal immigrants to enter Assam and helping them settle in the state. He spoke about the campaign undertaken by the current BJP government to evict these encroachers and grant land rights to the indigenous people and members of the tea tribe community.

“You have to be very careful because Congress is openly supporting these illegal immigrants. The party wants to introduce legislation that just calling someone an infiltrator will land you in jail,” he said.

In his second election meeting in Hogai, the Prime Minister accused the Congress of making false promises and indulging in corruption while alluding to the Gandhi family in Delhi and the Gogois in Assam (state Congress president, Gaurav Gogoi, son of former Prime Minister, Tarun Gogoi). “Their motto is ‘Family First’. Such people can never do anything good for the nation or Assam. They focus on two things: spreading lies and indulging in corruption on a massive scale…” he said.

Meanwhile, NCP chief Mallikarjun Kharge accused the BJP-led governments at the Center and in Assam of favoring corporate houses. “The BJP government is using bulldozers to remove alleged encroachments targeting one section of people, while large tracts of land are being given to corporates. This shows their true face,” he said at an election meeting in Cachar, Assam.
