Greg Abbott was mocked for his Diwali video when he said Texas would be the land of Indians as long as he was governor.
An old video of Texas Governor Greg Abbott saying that Texas will be a land for the Indian community as long as he remains the governor went viral on Monday with social media users sharing the video claiming that Abbott said this after there was a row over Hindus observing Chhath puja in Texas.
“Greg Abbott declares Texas a place for the Indian community, so what about Greg from Texas? Where do we go?” Reposting Abbott’s video, influencer Kylie Campbell said: “The influencer said: ‘What do they have on Greg to make him say that?’ The video in question is from the Diwali celebration and not recent. “As long as I am governor of this great state, Texas will be the land of the Indian community… and we will continue to celebrate Diwali here in the great state of Texas,” Abbott said in the video.
“What a shame @GregAbbott_TX. Appeasing every third world culture and doing nothing to protect Texas: Texas will be Indian land,” Republican Leader Alexander Duncan said. The attack on Abbott came at a time when Indians are witnessing an increase in hatred, especially in Texas, where the state harbors a large number of immigrants, including Indians. Several influential figures in Texas have begun talking about what they call an “Indian takeover” of the state, while many have claimed to have caught H-1B visa abuse.
Greg Abbott has halted H-1B visa hiring at Texas universities and agencies in a major move against a visa program that allows companies to hire specialized workers from abroad. Recently, another controversy erupted in Texas after a widely circulated video showed Indians pouring milk into a lake as part of Chhath puja celebrations in Denton. Several posts claimed that Abbott’s comment on the Indian community was after the Chhath puja row.Abbott won the Texas Republican primary last month as he seeks his fourth consecutive term in office.
