You know how most horror franchises just throw some scares at you and call it a day? The Conjuring world is built differently. It’s all rooted in the real-life case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren, two real-life paranormal investigators who spent decades entering homes that sane people would never enter.
Ten films spread across nearly 40 years of haunted history, filled with possessed dolls, demonic nuns, cursed farmhouses, and a married couple who somehow kept saying yes to every terrifying case that came to their desks. This is where the story actually begins.
‘the nun (2018) takes place in 1952
The Vatican sends a young novice nun and a troubled priest to investigate the death of a nun in a remote convent in Romania, because apparently the Vatican does.
What they find within those walls is Valak, a demonic entity disguised as a nun, ancient and truly terrifying. This is the origin story of the most terrifying villain in the entire series, a creature that would eventually find its way into the lives of the Warren family decades later.
Corin Hardy directs this film through 96 minutes of pure darkness and dread.
Annabelle: Creation (2017) is set in 1955
Twelve years after losing their young daughter in a tragic accident, a doll maker and his wife open their home to a group of orphan girls and a nun who cares for them.
What they didn’t tell anyone was that they had invited something else into the house as well, a demon that was waiting patiently inside a handmade doll. This is where Annabelle’s story really begins, and it’s far more disturbing than anything that came after.

Four years after her first terrifying encounter in Romania, Sister Irene is back, and so is Valak. This time, the Devil has followed a familiar face to a boarding school in the south of France, and a series of horrific deaths force Sister Irene to confront him once again.
Michael Chavez directs a film that deepens the mythology of the universe considerably, including revelations that quietly connect Sister Irene and Lorraine Warren herself.
Annabelle (2014) is set in 1967
A man buys a beautiful antique doll for his pregnant wife, not knowing that a demonic attack on their home that very night ends with the doll being used in a dark ritual. After that night, nothing is safe in their home. It’s the most straightforward movie in the universe, with no layers, just a possessed doll making two people’s lives completely miserable.
John R. Leonetti directs a film that is more of a mood film than a story, but it is effective nonetheless.
“The Conjuring” (2013) is set in 1971
A family moves to a secluded farm in Rhode Island and immediately realizes that there is something very wrong with the place. Ed and Lorraine Warren are called in to help, and what they find is one of the most powerful and dangerous cases of their careers. James Wan directs the movie that launched this entire universe, and it remains the best movie.
It won numerous awards in the horror genre and is widely regarded as one of the greatest horror films of all time.
Annabelle Comes Home (2019) is set in 1972
While Ed and Lorraine are away on a case, their young daughter Judy is left at home with a babysitter, right next door to the room where the Warrens keep every cursed and dangerous artifact they’ve ever collected, all locked for good reason. Annabelle wakes up, the locks open, and suddenly everything evil in that room is free.
The film “The Curse of La Llorona” (2019) is set in 1973
A Los Angeles social worker becomes involved with the legend of La Llorona, a weeping woman from Mexican folklore who drowned her own children and now spends eternity trying to take other people’s children. When you start targeting a social worker’s children, the only person who can help is a pastor who has faced something like this before. Michael Chavez directs a film that connects to the rest of the series through one familiar face, Father Perez from the Annabelle films.
The Conjuring 2 (2016) is set in 1977
Ed and Lorraine travel to Enfield in north London to help a single mother and her four children who are being terrorized by a violent poltergeist in their council house. It’s one of the most documented supernatural cases in British history, and James Wan has turned it into something amazing. Valak returns that will truly unsettle you, and the film briefly visits the haunted town of Amityville, tying together the biggest cases in the universe in one extraordinary hour.
“The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” (2021) is set in 1981
This starts with an exorcism and only gets weird from there. A young man kills his landlord and then does something no defense attorney has ever tried before: He claims demonic possession made him do it. Ed and Lorraine Warren must now prove the existence of evil in a court of law while also hunting down a demonic curse that is still very much active. Michael Chavez directs a film that replaces the haunted house formula with something more akin to a supernatural thriller, and it works surprisingly well.
“The Conjuring: Last Rites” (2025) is set in 1986
Final chapter. Ed and Lorraine Warren encounter the haunting Smorells, a Pennsylvania family whose new home turns out to be anything but, in what is called their final and most dangerous case. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga bring an end to nearly three decades of the franchise in a film that promises to tie it all together where it all began. Michael Chavez sends this farewell to the universe that frightened an entire generation of movie audiences.
