India is bracing for mixed weather this week, with rain likely across southern states and an active western disturbance bringing rain, snow and hailstorms to parts of northern India, according to the India Meteorological Department.
The Meteorological Department has warned of a turbulent wave over northwest India, caused by two western disturbances that are expected to peak on April 7 and 8.
Orange alert in Himachal as snowfall continues
The upper districts of Himachal Pradesh have already witnessed fresh snowfall, prompting the meteorological office in Shimla to issue an orange alert.
The warning covers areas including Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi and Shimla on April 7 and 8, with hailstorms, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of up to 40 to 60 kilometers per hour expected.
A new western disturbance is expected to affect the region from mid-week, with a long spell of rain likely to continue until April 11.
Thunderstorms for rajasthan
Light to moderate rain, snowfall in upper areas, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are likely across Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on April 6.
Similar conditions are expected to extend to Punjab and Rajasthan, where wind speeds will reach 60 kilometers per hour. The IMD also noted the possibility of thunderstorms, with wind speed reaching 70 kmph in parts of Rajasthan on April 7.
Hailstorm activity is likely in several regions, including Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan on April 7, and across Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on April 7 and 8.
“Heavy rain is likely to occur in Kashmir Valley on April 7,” the IMD said.
Delhi is witnessing a colder than usual April
Meanwhile, Delhi is experiencing an unusually mild April so far, with overcast skies expected to continue until April 8.
The maximum temperature on Sunday settled at 32.7 degrees Celsius, 1.3 degrees below normal, while the minimum temperature reached 20.1 degrees Celsius, which is also below the seasonal average. A PTI report added that a relative humidity of 46 per cent was recorded in the evening.
The International Meteorological Institute expected the weather on Monday to be partly cloudy, with temperatures likely to reach about 34 degrees Celsius during the day and 19 degrees Celsius at night. Skies are expected to be clear by mid-week.
A new active western disturbance set to affect northern India on April 7 and 8 will bring cooler daytime temperatures, “almost February levels,” amateur weather forecaster Navdeep Dahiya said.
Rainfall activity in South India
In southern India, light to moderate rains accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds are expected over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana and parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next five days.
“Heavy rain is likely in the Ghat districts of Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Kerala and Mahe on April 6,” the IMD said.
Chennai weather forecast
The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Chennai district for thunderstorms and lightning in parts of the district.
Meanwhile, other parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to witness scattered light to moderate rains, especially over the Western Ghat and southern regions.
Heavy rains are expected at isolated locations in Virudhunagar, Dindigul and Theni districts. While interior and coastal areas may witness intermittent rains with thunderstorms, several other parts of the state are likely to remain dry in phases till April 8.
Light rainfall is expected to continue at isolated places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal till April 7, with slightly wider rainfall activity likely on April 8.
