In an old interview, while speaking with Sunday Today, Matt Damon opened up about what happened behind the scenes of Good Will Hunting.
He revealed that initially the main cast did not see him and Affleck in the lead roles. However, the two managed to convince everyone.

“Stalone, that was our code word,” he said at the time. “We’d go to these meetings and these people would say, ‘You guys can’t play roles.’ I mean, come on.’ They wanted Brad [Pitt] And Leo [Leonardo DiCaprio]. We were like Sylvester Stallone. Yes, we can role-play, we are role-playing.”
This isn’t the only time Damon has mentioned the Rocky legend as the inspiration behind his role in Good Will Hunting. In 2016, when he attended a National Board of Review dinner in New York, he admitted that seeing Stallone in Rocky was a major inspiration for him. “Trust me, they really wanted to take this away from us, and they were like, ‘Oh my God, Leonardo DiCaprio would be so good in this,'” Damon shared, Variety reports. He concluded his speech by saying, “[Stallone’s] The story changed my life. “He had an incredible amount of courage, and he changed the course of our lives.”
