It’s going to be a long wait until we get back to Pandora, but according to the latest reports, work has officially begun on director James Cameron’s next two chapters in the “Avatar” saga. Months after the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, sequels IV and V have been making steady progress, following the film’s strong box office performance that pushed it past the US$1 billion mark.
“Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5” are lit green
Executive producer Ray Sanchini, who worked on the third installment, confirmed that pre-production is currently underway on the upcoming films. In a statement to People magazine, Ray said, “We’re now setting the timeline,” and also added, “We’re working hard on it now, in terms of budgeting, scheduling, planning, and building our new pipeline for them. As far as we’re concerned, we’re full speed ahead.”
‘Avatar 4’ and ‘Avatar 5’ scripts ‘amazing’
She also revealed that Cameron is working with his team on developing new technology to enhance the franchise’s visual storytelling.
Speaking about the film’s scripts, she added: “We have scripts, and they’re great. As far as I’m concerned, we’re moving forward.”The update comes on the heels of the success of Avatar: Fire and Ash, the sequel to Avatar: The Way of Water, which crossed US$1 billion at the global box office within weeks of its release and has gone on to earn approximately US$1.48 billion worldwide.
“Avatar 4” to tell the story of Farang
Reports indicate that “Avatar 4” will delve deeper into Varang’s “darkness” and her role as a formidable, malevolent, anti-Eywa Na’vi figure.
At the recent Saturn Awards, Cameron revealed that Farang’s character could be the main focus of the new film. “From Fire and Ashes, we may need to write a little farang going forward,” he said, explaining that the character is blended into the broader group because “there are a lot of characters and panels going on in the story.
“The director has previously stated that the box office performance of his films is important to continue producing big-budget films. He has previously indicated that the box office performance of Avatar: Fire and Ash will play a crucial role in determining whether the planned sequels go ahead.
Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 release dates.
The as-yet-untitled fourth and fifth films are tentatively scheduled to hit theaters in 2029 and 2031.
