The two systems are expected to bring widespread cloud cover, light to moderate rain, and gusty winds across several states, with peak activity expected April 3-4 and again on April 7.

While the Kashmir Valley is likely to witness severe weather spells, Delhi and neighboring areas are expected to witness cloudy skies with intermittent light rains during the week.

Rain and hailstorms in Kashmir, Himachal, Haryana, UP

The International Meteorological Department warned of active weather conditions across the region, including the possibility of hailstorms in isolated pockets.

  • “Intermittent heavy rain [is] “It is expected to hover over the Kashmir Valley on April 3 and 4,” the department said, indicating the strongest wave at the beginning of the week.
  • A new system is also scheduled to follow shortly after. “A new western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India from April 7, 2026,” the IMD added, indicating another round of rain activity.
  • Hail storm activity is expected to remain scattered but significant. Such conditions are “likely to be over Jammu Kashmir on 04, 07 and 08”, the IMD said.
  • Parts of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, East Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh are expected to witness a similar hailstorm on April 4.
  • These systems are also likely to be accompanied by strong winds. According to the weather bulletin, “Thunderstorm (wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph and gusting to 70 kmph) is likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Uttar Pradesh on April 04.”

Rainy, cloudy week ahead of Delhi

For Delhi, the IMD expects a largely cloudy week with short periods of light rain and thunderstorms, especially during the afternoon and evening.

  • The forecast for Saturday, April 4 is for “generally cloudy skies” with “one or two spells of very light rain/drizzle accompanied by thunderstorms/lightning and strong surface winds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour gusting to 50 kilometers per hour.” A yellow alert has been issued for today.
  • Conditions are expected to remain similar on Sunday (April 5), with “generally cloudy skies” and “possible very light rain accompanied by thunderstorms/lightning and gusty winds of 20 to 30 km/h gusting to 40 km/h,” although no warning has been issued.
  • April 6 will likely see partly cloudy skies, providing a brief respite. However, cloud cover and light rain are expected to return on April 7 and 8.
  • The IMD forecast predicts “one or two spells of light to very light rain accompanied by thunderstorms/lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph” on April 7-8.
  • The Meteorological Department indicated that partly cloudy weather conditions are likely to continue in the capital until April 10, with temperatures kept under control during the first half of the month.

There is a chance of rain interrupting the IPL match between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday, although a complete washout seems unlikely, amateur meteorologist Navdeep Dahiya said on Channel X.

He added in the post that the thunderstorms developing over Rajasthan in the afternoon are expected to move towards Delhi by evening. He said there are “chances of rapid moderate to heavy rainfall in a few parts of Delhi NCR including the place between 5 to 9 pm today.”

Rain and thunderstorms sweep the plains

Apart from the hills, plains in northwest India are also expected to witness unstable weather. The IMD forecast “isolated to scattered light to moderate rain with isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (up to 40-50 kmph)” over eastern Rajasthan on April 4.

Lightning activity is also expected to continue in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan over the next few days, adding to unstable conditions.
