David E. Kelley’s upcoming project for Apple TV will take on one of the quintessential novels of the 1980s.
The prolific director is teaming up with director Matt Reeves for a Tom Wolfe-inspired series The fire of vanity. The project is in development at Apple TV, with Warner Bros. TV as a studio.
kelly (Big little liesApple Presumed innocent) is adapted from the novel, and Reeves (The Batman, War for the Planet of the Apes) is on board to direct. They will executive produce alongside Sarah Geismer of Reeves’ 6th and Idaho Productions and Matthew Tinker of Kelley’s namesake company.
The Bonfire of the Vanities is Kelly’s second show based on one of Woolf’s novels. He had previously adapted A man in full For a 2024 Netflix limited series, starring Jeff Daniels.
It was a bestseller when it was published in 1987, The fire of vanity The film examines the excesses of Wall Street in the 1980s and the media and political cultures of New York at the time. The story revolves around a bond trader accused of a hit-and-run, a tabloid reporter covering the case and the assistant district attorney who investigates it.
The novel has been adapted once before, as an infamous feature film. Brian De Palma directed the 1990 film, which starred Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis and Melanie Griffith.
