“I have a problem with some Indians”: Dinesh D’Souza’s reaction to the “homosexuals in Hormuz” comment in the popular No Kings protest video

A wide-ranging interview conducted on a street during a protest in the US sparked online reactions, with conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza criticizing what he called the “wrong” kind of cultural assimilation among some Indian Americans. The controversy comes from a clip filmed at “No Kings” protests in parts of the United States. The demonstrations were aimed at opposing US President Donald Trump’s foreign policy, especially tensions related to the Strait of Hormuz. However, a strange exchange has gone viral.

In a video, a street interviewer sarcastically asks a protester a question, asking whether “homophobia is the reason we focus on the Strait of Hormuz and not the gays in Hormuz.”

The woman answers: “Yes, I agree. Yes, sure… They are heading towards the Strait of Hormuz but they are not willing to protect gay people in Hormuz. This is not cool.”The phrase “homosexuals in Hormuz” is a fictional phrase, a play on words referring to the strategic waterway. However, the protester appears to be treating it as a real issue, even trying to provide a historical explanation for the discrimination. The clip went viral. American Indian Dinesh used it to comment on cultural identity and assimilation.

“Even I have a problem with some Indians, not because they haven’t assimilated… but because they’ve assimilated into the wrong America,” he wrote in a post on X.In a split-screen video, he explained more details as the viral video played: “So one of the participants in the ‘No Kings’ protests went up to this activist and asked a very ‘direct’ question. You know, until recently, we Indian Americans in this country had a reputation of being fairly smart.”

People like me have worked hard to earn this reputation. Sometimes we think about immigrants and wish they would assimilate….but you know what? This young woman took me in.

You have integrated into America, but which America? It is not our America, and it is not traditional America. She has been assimilated into the America she knows. The media, the elites, the progressives, it’s the America you know, and they’ve picked up all its clichés, all its biases.

Some Internet users wondered whether the woman was of Indian origin, as there was no confirmation of her ethnic origin, while others defended her, considering that she was expressing sympathy, albeit in a confused context. People summoned D’Souza, pointed out his immigrant background, and accused him of hypocrisy. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, with nearly a fifth of global oil shipments passing through it. Currently, tensions are rising due to ongoing friction between the United States and Iran. There are concerns about potential unrest, military positions and threats to shipping lanes. Any escalation may affect global oil prices and trade. In short, it is a dangerous geopolitical hotspot with real economic and security consequences around the world.
