Nabil Fahmy will be appointed Secretary-General of the Arab League after countries agreed to nominate Egypt to succeed Aboul Gheit next June

The Arab League Council unanimously approved Egypt’s nomination of former Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy as Secretary-General of the Arab League for a period of five years starting on July 1, 2026.This came during the 165th meeting of the Council of the League of Arab States, which was held via video communication technology under the presidency of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

During the meeting, Egypt’s nomination for Fahmy was formally presented through an official memorandum from its permanent delegation to the Arab League.Fahmy will assume his duties as successor to the current Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, whose second term ends on June 30 of this year. He was the only candidate for this position.Fahmy (75 years old) is a well-known Egyptian diplomat with decades of experience. He served as Egyptian Foreign Minister from July 2013 to June 2014, and before that, Egyptian Ambassador to the United States from 1999 to 2008.Aside from his diplomatic work, Fahmy also played a major role in education. He founded the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the American University in Cairo and currently serves as its honorary dean. He also contributed extensively to the study of international relations.He comes from a diplomatic family. His father, Ismail Fahmy, was Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs between 1973 and 1977.The appointment will become official after its approval at the Arab Summit in Saudi Arabia, after which Fahmi is expected to take charge in July 2026.
