As previously reported by HT, Soham Naik was arrested and booked on charges of rape, distribution of obscene material, cheating, and criminal intimidation, under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and the Information Technology (IT) Act.

As the investigation unfolds, here’s a look at some key updates to the case.

Goa sex scandal case | Five major updates

  1. Two sisters among the victims – Police officials said that among Naik’s victims were two sisters, one of whom was a minor. Both women accused Naik of rape.
  2. Multiple victims – Investigators also stated that Naik exploited several victims. While initial reports suggested that the number of victims could range from 15 to 30 girls, the Congress has alleged that Naik assaulted around 100 girls. “The number of victims exceeds 100. The accused has been committing the crime for the past three years. This sex scandal is much bigger than what is being portrayed,” Goa Congress president Amit Patekar said.
  3. Received four complaints – Police said that so far, four females have filed complaints against Naik, including his girlfriend. Officials said attempts are underway to identify other potential victims.
  4. The BJP is distancing itself from the scandal – After Naik’s arrest, it turned out that he is the son of Sushant Naik, a municipal council member affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party. However, the BJP sought to distance itself from Naik and stated that he is not a member of the party. Speaking to reporters in Curshorem, BJP leader and former Rajya Sabha MP, Vinay Tendulkar, claimed that Sushant Naik, the father of the accused, was not a member of the party. “Municipal elections are not conducted on party symbols,” he said, adding that Sushant Naik was not even a core member of the BJP. “This act (scandal) is shameful and is not supported by the BJP in any way. We condemn this act,” the former MP told reporters.
  5. Congress questions the lack of action – Speaking to reporters, Goa Congress president Amit Patekar wondered why action was taken against Naik after almost three years. “The accused turned 21 this week. This means he was involved in the crime since he was 17 to 18 years old. The Curchorim police were initially reluctant to register the case and did so only after pressure from locals. Why have the Goa State Women’s Commission, Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights and the state education department not taken action yet,” he asked.
