NOIDA: The Noida International Airport will be among the most important new projects in the country, will ease congestion at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport and will be a major boost to the country’s logistics sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday, a day before its inauguration.

“Tomorrow…is a day of great importance for the people of Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region. The first phase of Noida International Airport will be inaugurated. This will boost trade and connectivity. It will ease congestion at Delhi’s IGI Airport. Noida Airport is among the major new projects of our nation. In addition to passenger services, it will have a strong freight ecosystem thus boosting the logistics sector,” the Prime Minister posted on X.

Spanning 11,742.45 acres, the airport will be home to an 87-acre intermodal cargo hub and a 40-acre maintenance, repair and operation center and will be the most energy efficient project of its kind, officials said.
Shailendra Bhatia, Additional Chief Executive Officer, Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) and Nodal Officer, Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL), said: “Noida International Airport is poised to become India’s largest airport upon completion with an eventual capacity to serve 225 million passengers annually, serving as a major catalyst for economic growth and connectivity across the National Capital Region (NCR).

The airport is planned to be developed in two phases. The capacity will be expanded from 70 million passengers to 225 million passengers in the two phases. The first phase will consist of four phases, with annual passenger numbers expected to grow from 12 million to 70 million.
A 40-year concession agreement has been signed between NIAL and Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd (YIAPL) – a 100% subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG – to develop the first phase. As part of the first phase, the airport will be constructed in four phases over an area of 1,334 hectares and will have two runways with a final handling capacity of 70 million passengers per year. The first phase will handle 12 million passengers annually.
Multimodal shipping center
The airport has allocated 87 acres to develop a multimodal cargo hub, which will include an integrated cargo terminal, a warehouse and a logistics area. About 30 acres will be used for domestic and international courier terminals.
Total investment $In the first phase, Rs 800 crore has been allocated for the freight centre, with a total expected investment of $3200 crores after the final stage. “The freight terminal is designed to handle 2,55,000 metric tons of cargo annually, which will be expanded to handle 1.8 million metric tons,” said RK Singh, CEO, NIAL.

First airport with MRO
It will become the first airport in the country to have an in-house maintenance, repair and overhaul facility. NIAL has allocated 40 acres of land for MRO operations and recently entered into a partnership with SNV Aviation Private Ltd (Akasa Air) to develop, operate and manage the facility, which will be developed over an area of 1.54 acres with an investment of Rs. $60 Crores.
Sustainability features
Designed as a net-zero airport, NIA was developed in collaboration with Zurich Airport Group to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability.
Two rainwater harvesting ponds were created to ensure sustainable water supply. A sewage treatment plant with a capacity of 3 million liters is planned to treat wastewater generated from airport operations. A solar farm with an area of 82.94 acres was established with a generating capacity of 51,966 megawatts.
Industrial growth
YEEDA officials said that the development of Noida International Airport has served as a strong catalyst for industrial growth in the region. Dedicated parks such as Apparel Park, MSME Park, Toy Park, Data Center Park and ODOP Handicraft Park are being developed.

The region has also attracted high-value strategic investments, most notably the India Chip semiconductor facility, a joint venture between HCL and Foxconn, with investments of over $Rs 3,700 crore aims to strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Mission. Work has also begun on the 350-acre medical device complex. In addition, an international film city is planned to be built near the airport with an investment of more than $100 $1,500 Crores. In total, industry commitments amount to approx $Rs 30,000 crore received.
