A total of 667 cases of crimes against women were registered in Tripura last year, with police arresting 426 accused in connection with these incidents, according to a report submitted to the state assembly.

The number of these cases decreased last year compared to 2023 and 2024, when a total of 791 and 724 cases were registered, respectively, in different police stations.

According to the report, 1,439 people were found involved in these cases, and police filed indictments against 1,072 of them last year. However, only eight people were convicted in these cases.

Of the total cases of crimes against women registered last year, 168 cases of rape, 116 cases of harassment, 19 cases of dowry deaths, and 206 cases related to cruelty against women. Police investigations revealed the involvement of 298 people in rape-related cases and arrested 182 of them. Indictments were filed against 204 people in these cases.

Last year, a total of 116 cases of harassment were recorded, involving 186 people. Police arrested 58 people in connection with these cases and later indicted 154 people.

In the case of 19 dowry deaths, the police arrested 31 people and indicted 29 people.

The police registered a total of 206 cases related to cruelty against women, in which 35 people were arrested. Indictments were filed against 477 people in these cases.

In 2024, a total of 724 crimes against women were recorded, including 180 cases of rape, 108 cases of harassment, 20 dowry deaths, and 257 cases of cruelty against women. In comparison, 2023 recorded a higher total of 791 cases, including 139 cases of rape, 151 cases of molestation, 21 cases of dowry deaths, and 319 cases of cruelty against women.

The police arrested 204 people in connection with rape cases in 2024, compared to 186 in 2023. In harassment cases, 60 people were arrested in 2024 and 69 in 2023. Arrests in dowry death cases reached 22 people in 2024, down from 47 in 2023. In cases of cruelty against women, the police arrested 55 people in 2024, compared to 55 people in 2024. 30 in 2023.

Last January, Prime Minister Manik Saha said the overall crime rate would fall by 19.3% in 2024, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), and Tripura ranked third in terms of crime rate in the country.

He said that crimes against women decreased by 55%, property crimes by 45%, incidents of community violence by 75%, physical attacks by 38%, and total incidents of violence by 37% in 2024.
