Last week’s penultimate episode of the FX series focused on Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s mental health as paparazzi attention relentlessly intensified following her marriage to John F. Kennedy Jr. (Paul Anthony Kelly). This cliffhanger leads to what will be a tragic finale, beginning when the ’90s power couple finds themselves in a rocky place, as teased in the opening moments of the premiere.
In the penultimate episode, “Exit Strategy,” last week’s hour opened with a clear breakup: John walked into their Tribeca apartment and wondered why Caroline was missing another public event. He struggles to understand her self-isolation, while Caroline cannot understand how he continues to maintain his social life and obligations at home. George magazine.
Tensions mount when Caroline receives a frantic call from her sister Lauren Bisset (Sydney Lemon) urging her to turn on the TV. Then I learned that Princess Diana died in a car accident while being chased by paparazzi.
Like much of the world, Caroline was shaken. Actress Sarah Pidgeon noted the similarity between the two women and their relationship with the press.
“We’ve got the scripts for [episode] eight [‘Exit Strategy’] We got really close when we were shooting Seven, but I knew from conversations with Connor [Hines, the showrunner] Pidgeon told the writers that there was an intention to explore how Diana’s death affected Caroline Hollywood Reporter. “There is a photo of Caroline at Versace’s funeral. Diana’s death upsets both John and Caroline in the series. Realizing the similarities, John becomes fearful whether this news will set Caroline back even further.
A year later, the episode then moved to John, who uses crutches, mirroring the real-life ankle injury he suffered from a paragliding accident weeks before the July 16, 1999, plane crash that tragically killed him, Caroline and Lauren.
As time passes, there is still distance between the couple. The final 17 minutes of the episode unfold as a big monologue showing their differences, and the tension caused by how fame has changed their relationship.
Pidgeon said her theater background was an advantage for the scene. Her performance has already made people expect her as a strong contender for the Emmys. (Pidgeon was nominated for a Tony Award for anthropomorphic In 2024.)
“I liked that episode because it felt like a play,” she said. “I was so excited. You rarely get a full scene, especially in television, where you get to see the entire arc. Every moment can change radically depending on the scene you’re doing.”
She continued: “It felt like being in the theater where you’re on stage and it’s just you and your scene partner. It was really interesting to process that from my theatrical perspective. I was able to sit in on Caroline a little bit more.”
The episode then ends with Caroline breaking down and begging John not to leave. He insists it’s just for the night, but she fears it goes deeper.
A preview of the finale showed the couple going through marriage counseling during their final months, trying to repair their relationship. There are glimpses of them seeming to find their spark again by going on romantic dates, including at the restaurant where they had their first date – which makes it all the more heartbreaking to see what’s to come.
The series began with the final day, a choice that takes on more weight now that the finale is here. Focus on love story, However, talk remains about the relationship between the couple and how they overcome their most difficult moments.
