Despite the legacy of his superstar father Mammootty, Dulquer Salmaan forged his own path, overcoming initial fears and insecurities. His journey, marked by a late debut and early struggles in Hindi cinema, highlights his dedication. From Malayalam hits like ‘Ustad Hotel’ to Hindi hits, Dulquer’s hard work and passion for cinema continues to define his career.
Although Dulquer Salmaan is often called the ‘Nepo kid’, he is someone who has struggled enough to achieve the superstar status he has now. Although the title of son of superstar Mammootty helped him get into films, the rest of his success depends solely on his hard work. Actor Dulquer Salmaan has often spoken about the journey that led him to cinema. The Malayalam star made his debut at the age of 28, which is later than many second generation actors.DQ studied Business Administration at Purdue University in the United States. At that point, he wasn’t seriously considering business as a career. However, after returning to India, he started receiving film offers, and even then, he remained hesitant to enter the industry.
Fear of letting his father down
In a previous interview with India Today magazine, Dulquer Salmaan admitted that fear played a major role in delaying his film debut. The actor revealed his anxiety about failing as an actor and disappointing audiences who admired his father, “I was afraid. Even when I came to cinema at the age of 28, I was filled with fear. I wasn’t sure if I could act or if people would be able to watch me for two hours in the theatre.”Dulker added that insecurity was common during that stage of life, “I think during our 20s we face a lot of insecurities.
Then we will not have much confidence in ourselves. Same thing with me.”The pressure of carrying a famous title also made him cautious. He also said, “At that time too, it was rare for second generation actors to do well in Malayalam cinema. Prithviraj came very early. Fahadh came at the time I did. So I don’t have much of a reference there. I was terrified of tarnishing the name of such a legend (Mammootty).”
Early struggles in the Indian film industry
While Dulquer later built a successful career in various industries, his early experiences in Hindi cinema were not always smooth sailing.Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter in 2025, he explained how difficult it was to assert himself in certain groups. He noted that he sometimes had to project an image of stardom in order to be taken seriously.Dulquer said, “When I was shooting Hindi films here, my two characters and I would be under pressure on the sets. I had to create this illusion of being this big star. Otherwise I would not find chairs to sit on. I would not find space to look at the screens.”
“It’s going to be a big crowd of people.”This experience changed his perspective on how the industry often works, “I realized it’s all just perception. If you come in a luxury car with a lot of people, suddenly the perception becomes: ‘Oh, that’s a star.’ Which is sad because that’s not where my energy should go.”
He rose to prominence in Malayalam cinema
Dulquer Salmaan made his acting debut with the Malayalam film ‘Second Show’. However, it was the success of “Ustad Hotel” that established him as a promising young actor. He soon appeared in many popular films including ‘ABCD’ and ‘Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi’. His Tamil debut came with ‘Vaayai Moodi Pesavum’ where he collaborated with Nazriya Nazim and it was also a unique attempt. The actor’s career reached a new stage with the success of the band’s hit ‘Bangalore Days’, an all-time blockbuster film. He also enhanced his reputation with popular performances in ‘Charlie’, ‘Kali’ and ‘Kamathi Padam’.
Expansion across Indian cinema
Over the years, Dulquer has expanded his career beyond Malayalam cinema. He has found success in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films. His Tamil film OK Kanmani received wide appreciation and he also appeared in the Telugu biographical drama ‘Mahanati’ and the romantic film ‘Sita Ramam’.In Bollywood, he has appeared in films like Karwaan and The Zoya Factor, where the former received a lot of appreciation while the latter was less appreciated. After a long gap, Dulquer tried to make a comeback in Malayalam cinema with King of Kotha which unfortunately failed.
The actor recently received a lot of love for his performance in the film ‘Kaantha’.As DQ is all set for his most awaited film ‘I’M Game’, he is certainly adhering to the moral he shared in a previous interview – ‘Now my life, my ambition and my inspiration is cinema’. I love staying at home, and it is only because of my passion for cinema that I was able to get out of that happy space.
