Senior Congress leaders expressed confidence that Kannur Lok Sabha MP and former KPCC president K Sudhakaran will abide by the party’s diktats after an emotional post on his Facebook account on Friday.

Sudhakaran, who has publicly expressed his desire to contest the upcoming Assembly elections from Kannur, has reportedly been informed by KPCC president Sunny Joseph that the party high command will take the final decision on whether the sitting MPs should contest the Assembly elections.
With several MPs, including Sudhakaran, Adoor Prakash and Shafi Parambil, harboring hopes of returning to state politics, the party’s central leadership is likely to scrap such ideas.
On Friday, in a Facebook post, Sudhakaran spoke about his district Kannur, in an emotional manner, asserting that he had acted as a “mother hen” to protect generations of Congress workers and leaders from “attacks and violence perpetrated by the Communist Party of India (Maoist)” in the district.
“Kannur is the land where our hearts bled. It is the land that witnessed the sacrifices of Congress workers. And for that land, K Sudhakaran will always be there, carrying the Congress tricolor on his chest,” the MP said in the post.
Those close to the Congress leader said the post was aimed at pressuring the leadership to allow him to contest from the Kannur Assembly constituency, paving the way for his return to state politics. Dozens of workers loyal to him visited his residence and put up posters demanding a ticket from Kannur.
Sudhakaran served as KPCC president from 2021 to 2025 and was elected from Kannur Lok Sabha constituency three times in 2009, 2019 and 2024. He was elected to the state assembly from Kannur three times, in 1996, 2001 and 2006. He served as the state forest minister between 2001 and 2006. 2004.
Leader of the Opposition V D Sathisan said Sudhakaran would always remain a loyal leader of the Congress party.
“In the post, he only talked about his romantic relationship with Kannur. He did not say anything about his desire to contest the elections. As I understand it, someone close to him posted it on Facebook. He said he was not aware of it,” Sathisan said.
Senior leader Ramesh Chennithala said Sudhakaran still enjoys good relations with everyone in the party. “It’s not frustrating at all,” he added.
