The elderly woman, who was bedridden for the past few years, was attacked by a solitary stray dog that managed to enter her single-storey, tile-roofed house at around 6 pm on Thursday, said Abhilash, a former panchayat ward member.

The former ward member said: “One of her three sons, who lived nearby, discovered her in a very bad condition as her face was completely disfigured in the stray dog attack. She succumbed to her injuries before being taken to the hospital.”

It was learned that the stray dog entered the house through the front door which was said to have been left open. He was later arrested and beaten to death by locals later that night.

“The woman has two sons with different abilities. One of them is currently hospitalized after the same dog attack. He was also bedridden. He is in a critical condition now,” Abhilash said. He added that the dog also bit the wire worker, who was also taken to hospital.

“Stray dog attacks are a regular feature here in Kadangod panchayat. Government officials have done nothing to stop this menace. There are at least 500 dogs on the roads within the panchayat. At least 100 people have been bitten in the last five years,” he added.

He said panchayat officials and local residents had written several complaints to the district superintendent about the stray dog menace, but there was no effective response.

Waiting for a response from the district administration, and the version will be updated whenever it is received.
