Police have arrested a man from Jaipur who allegedly killed his wife and young daughter, while sitting with their bodies all night on the balcony.

“The incident occurred when his son and brother went to attend the wedding of one of their relatives. Prima facie, he was stressed due to his deteriorating health and poor financial condition. We are investigating the matter,” Jaipur Inspector of Police (Rural) Shivlal Berwa said.

The accused, Surjit Singh, works in a local factory in Mukhampura in Jaipur. “He was diagnosed with tuberculosis a year ago, and since then his health has not been good. He was quarreling with his wife almost daily. He may not have been in a sound state of mind,” Berwa said.

On Wednesday, his wife Saroj Devi (35) and daughter Anshika (8) were sleeping on the balcony.

“Surjit came back from the factory, took out a sword, and suddenly attacked Saroj. He slaughtered her several times at first. When Anshika woke up, he strangled her to death,” said Berwa.

After killing the duo, he sat with the bodies all night. “In the morning, he started screaming from the balcony, called the neighbors and told them that he had killed them. Local residents immediately called the police, who arrived and arrested Surjit,” he added.

The police sent the two bodies for autopsy and registered a case of murder under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
