New Delhi: The government has decided to build a new Green Express highway between Surat and Kurnool, which will reduce the distance between Delhi and Chennai by 320 km, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari informed Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

Responding to supplementary queries during the Question Hour, the Minister said that the travel time between Delhi and Mumbai will also come down to within 12 hours after the construction of this expressway.
He was responding to questions related to road infrastructure development in Kolhapur, where there is a lot of traffic and congestion.
“Now, we have taken what is a historic decision, which is the construction of the Express Expressway from Mumbai to Delhi, which is already 70-80 per cent complete.
“After Surat, we are constructing the new Green Express Expressway, starting from Surat to Nasik to Ahmednagar to Sholapur to Kurnool, and from there it will connect to Chennai, Kanyakumari, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Cochin. It is a new connection from North India to South India,” the Minister informed the members.
“This will reduce the distance between Delhi and Chennai by 320 km, which in turn will reduce the cost, and because of the expressway, we will also reduce the time period. So, Mumbai-Delhi will be within 12 hours,” Gadkari said in the Senate.
Pointing out that this is a very important connection starting from Pune to Kolhapur, he said that the most important issue is not for Kolhapur or Maharashtra, but for the entire country as the traffic starts from North India starting from Delhi, and heads towards the south as it passes through Surat, Vadodra and Ahmedabad after which the traffic goes to Mumbai and then to Pune and from Pune to Kolhapur and Sholapur.
