The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved an amendment to the Green Expressway to include an 11-km elevated stretch between Noida International Airport in Jewar and Faridabad at a revised cost of $3,631 Crores.

The elevated corridor will connect Jewar Airport with the Faridabad-Ballabgarh-Sohna Expressway on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.

The road was originally planned as a level corridor and work has already begun under the Bharatmala Pariyojana programme, the Centre’s flagship highway development program which aims to build and modernize key economic corridors across the country.

According to a press release, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the revised total capital cost of $3,631 crore for construction of the expressway. The elevated stretch between the DND-Ballabhgarh corridor and Jewar Airport will cost more $689.24 crore, of which the Haryana government will bear $450 Crores.

About 7.8 km of the corridor passes through the urban boundaries notified under the Faridabad Master Plan 2031, prompting the decision to build this portion as an elevated extension to accommodate the planned high-density urban development and future infrastructure expansion, officials said.

The elevated corridor will connect Jewar Airport with the Faridabad-Ballabgarh-Sohna Expressway on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, improving regional connectivity and access to the upcoming airport at Jewar. The project is expected to unlock the full potential of the expressway corridor between Jewar Airport, Delhi and Mumbai while supporting sustainable urban development in Faridabad, the government said.

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnao said the corridor will significantly improve connectivity to Jewar Airport.

“With this road, Jewar Airport connectivity will be established with the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, Yamuna Expressway, Mumbai-Delhi Expressway (Delhi-Faridabad-Ballabgarh-Sohna Spur), and the dedicated freight corridor,” Vaishnau said.

“As Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has always emphasized, we must have multi-modal connectivity where each mode can benefit from the others. With the Jati Shakti mindset, this project was approved by the Cabinet today,” he added.

The Cabinet also approved several other projects related to infrastructure and water supply in rural areas, including upgrading Madurai Airport in Tamil Nadu into an international aviation hub.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) last Friday granted an airport license to the upcoming Noida International Airport, clearing the final regulatory hurdle before its launch and paving the way for operations to begin within 45 days.

In its first phase, the airport will have one runway and a passenger terminal capable of handling 12 million passengers annually. The facility is expected to be expanded in phases to accommodate up to 70 million passengers in the future.

The license certifies that the airport meets the safety and operational standards set by the Aviation Regulatory Authority. According to a government statement, the airport was licensed under the “general use” category for operations in all weather conditions.
