NEW DELHI: Of the 804 registered hospitals performing organ transplants, 217 hospitals failed to report data on the National Registry portal in 2025 and action will be taken against them by the state governments concerned, Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav told Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

In a written response to a query, Jadhav said that registration of hospitals to perform organ transplantation is done by the competent authority of the respective states and union territories where the hospital is located.
“Against 804 registered hospitals performing organ transplants, 217 hospitals failed to report their data on the National Registry portal during 2025.
“Under the provisions of the Human Organ and Tissue Transplantation Act, 1994 and the rules made thereunder, the concerned state governments are required to take regulatory action against such hospitals,” Jadhav said.
The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Registry Portal has been in operation since 2015 and is available to authorized users, including hospitals and organizations, through the National Organization for Organ and Tissue Transplantation website.
As of March 3, 2026, according to data reported by hospitals and transplant centers on the national registration portal of the National Organization for Organ and Tissue Transplantation, the waiting list for major organs in the country is 89,839.
During the year 2025, the number of organ transplants performed in the country reached 20,019, Jadhav said in his written response.
The center implements the National Organ Transplantation Programme, which aims to strengthen the infrastructure and services related to organ transplantation and increase awareness about organ donation in the country.
Under the programme, Regional Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organizations and State Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organizations have been established in the states and union territories of the Northern Region, Eastern Region and North-Eastern Region.
