According to Vicky Lalwani, ‘Lahore 1947’ was renamed ‘Batwara 1947’. Produced by Aamir Khan, the film is set during the Partition of India in 1947 and stars Aamir alongside Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, and Abhimanyu Singh.
It is based on Asghar Wahat’s play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai.

The film is set during the difficult times of the partition of India in 1947. The film revolves around Mai, an old Hindu woman who resides in Lahore after the partition, and shows the deep emotions and complexities of that period. Veteran director Govind Nihalani bought the film rights for the first time. But when Santoshi found this powerful story, he wanted to turn it into a film.It is said that Santoshi always cast Sunny Deol in the lead of this film.
After more than a decade of waiting, he teamed up with producer Aamir Khan, who backed the pairing of Santoshi and Sunny. Before his directorial debut, Santoshi collaborated closely with Nihalani in films like Vijeta (1982), Ardh Satya (1983), Party (1984) and Aghaat (1985).The film’s music is composed by the legendary Abdul Rahman, with lyrics written by the famous Javed Akhtar. This collaboration marks a momentous reunion for the duo, who had previously captured the essence of the Partition era in the 1998 cult classic ‘1947 Earth’. It’s a powerful reunion for Rajkumar Santoshi, who once again teams up with Sunny Deol and Aamir Khan, his long-time collaborators in some of Bollywood’s best films.
