TimesofIndia.com in Ahmedabad: On Saturday, most eyes were glued to the nets as Abhishek Sharma was batting during India’s training session on the eve of the T20 World Cup final against New Zealand. Facing a mix of bowling specialists and bowlers, Abhishek batted for nearly 30 minutes and was closely monitored by batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Flavor was flavour, and there was plenty of inside-out strike, which became cleaner as it settled into the crease.

Abhishek’s father and childhood coach, Rajkumar Sharma, was stationed away from the action but had the best vantage point possible to watch his son walk through the steps one last time before the big night. The father was not concerned and continued to raise his neck in the direction in which the ball was hit. Every courteous contact was met with an emphatic nod. Unbeknownst to his son, the father, his biggest cheerleader, supporter and critic, was quietly there to offer support during the most difficult phase of his career.

Bahoot time bad net dekh raha ho, kal sab acha hoga team bhi world cup jeetiji (I see his goal after a very long time. Everything will be good tomorrow and the team will win the World Cup.)Pointing to the hospitality box above, the father added: “I’m sitting there, but the real fun is watching the match from here. I watched all his early days of cricket near the boundary ropes, it was fun.”

Without his glasses, he couldn’t observe the proceedings as closely as he would have liked, but the sound of the shots was reassuring enough to put a smile on his face. When Abhishek finished his knock, coach Gambhir called him over and the two had a long conversation that lasted for nearly twenty minutes. It was a lively, enthusiastic talk, highlighted by fingers pointing to different parts of the Earth and lots of reassurance.

Father Rajkumar watched the conversation, and the moment it ended, bowlers and spectators mobbed Abhishek, demanding selfies and autographs.

He obliged them all and the father gave his son the required space before heading towards him.Usko bata to deta ho mai aya ho (He laughs) [Let me tell him that I am here]He said.Father and son met and had a brief chat, mostly about cricket and batting, before the moment was interrupted by more requests of “Abhishek sir, Abhishek sir”.Abhishek asked a member of the support staff to take his equipment to the dressing room, and the left-hander made sure he signed every piece of paper that came his way through the security fence.

It was a difficult tournament for the world number one, as he was not yet at full strength and suffered from a lack of rotation. The teams cracked his code and he scored his first World Cup run in his fourth innings after three ducks. A stomach infection that forced him into hospital didn’t help, and getting back to fluent ways has been a struggle ever since. A batsman who thrashed the opposition in the matches leading up to the tournament became a wicket-taker for the opponents.

All they have to do is deploy a tool outside the rotor. Even part time will do.After scoring 89 points in eight matches, the youngster will need to take a new stance and forget everything that has happened so far. For some hitters, it’s about getting a couple nice hits before normality returns. Abhishek belongs to that school of batsman and doesn’t need to look back too far for inspiration. In the match against Zimbabwe, the opener tried to spend time in midfield, and while the lack of rotation on the power play helped, his patience also paid off.

a prayer (Prayer),” was the word the father used repeatedly as he met several greeters near the display. He also had a brief interaction with ICC President Jay Shah, who was inspecting the preparations for the grand final at the Narendra Modi Stadium along with other officials of the world cricket body. When the team returned to the dressing room and the stadium was cleared for the musical performances on Sunday, father Rajkumar left the building praying that his son would return to his dominating ways as he watched from the hospitality box in the third tier.
