Speaking at a day-long conference on ‘Celebrating Women’s Leadership’ organized by the Indo-US Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Association of Indian Law Firms, Sharma highlighted the strength of women and the importance of motherhood by recalling tales of his late mother and the Supreme Court debate on the abortion issue.

He began his speech by quoting from the Taittriya Upanishad, saying: “Treat your mother like a god, treat your father like a god, and treat your teachers like a god.”

“In our culture, it is deeply ingrained that wherever women are worshipped, God resides there. Mother is the root of everything. Women are truly in the leadership role, bringing out excellence,” Sharma said.

Referring to the ongoing debates on women’s rights, Sharma said the idea of ”granting” equality or rights to women is misplaced, adding that emotional strength and nurturing qualities play an essential role in shaping society.

Speaking about leadership, ASG Sharma said that true leadership goes beyond individual success and requires taking responsibility for failures while sharing success with the team.

He said: “A leader is a person who guides others towards achieving excellence and achieving perfection.”

The inaugural session was shortly followed by a panel discussion on “Nations Rise When Women Are Educated”, attended by guests such as former Additional Solicitor General and Senior Advocate Pinky Anand.

When asked what needs to be done legally to ensure women’s liberation, Anand said the law only serves as an enabling tool that provides structures and opportunities for women to advance.

She stressed that while law can provide frameworks, it is equally important for communities to mobilize collectively to make meaningful use of available opportunities.

The former Assistant Secretary General said that Indian society has shown progressive trends over time, noting that legal developments often arise from societal concerns. Pointing to incidents of violence against women in Rajasthan that prompted judicial intervention, which ultimately led to the creation of the Vishaka Guidelines to address sexual harassment at the workplace, she emphasized that previous societal concerns had led to collective mobilization to create legal safeguards.

“The answer lies in the way we mobilize our structures. As women, we must exercise every right we have,” Anand said, adding that the demand should not just be for equality, but for access and opportunity to become anything one aspires to be.

The event was attended by other prominent figures, including Supreme Court lawyer Nupur Sharma, international athlete Suvarna Raj, businessman Blossom Kochhar and many others.
