With a promise of Rs 2,500 a month, plus a gold ring, Vijay’s TVK targets women voters ahead of Tamil Nadu elections

Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay on Saturday announced a series of promises to women if his party is voted to power in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

These promises include monthly financial assistance of $2500 royal gold with a silk saree as a wedding gift for young women and six free LPG cylinders for all families. The actor-turned-politician made the promises at the International Women’s Day event held by the party in Mamallapuram.

Vijay said, according to PTI, that the monthly assistance will be provided to all women except government employees, up to the age of 60, when his party comes to power. The six LPG cylinders will be supplied annually under the ‘Annapurani Super Six Scheme’. To ensure that they do not drop out of school, each mother or guardian will be provided with annual financial assistance of $100,000. $15,000 under ‘Kamarajar Kalvi Uruthi Thittam’.

The state is scheduled to go to the polls within two months, with the ruling issued DMK is fighting for another state. While the AIADMK and the BJP have an alliance, Vijay’s TVK is going solo as a dark horse in the polls.

  • Interest-free allocation up to $5 lakh to women self-help groups (SHGs).
  • Free sanitary napkins for women through grocery stores, schools and colleges.
  • Vijay said that if his party forms the government in Tamil Nadu, it will follow a “zero tolerance policy” towards crimes against women.
  • Introducing ‘smart panic buttons’ in public transport for women’s safety.
  • Special fast-track courts for speedy adjudication of cases of crimes committed against women.
  • A dedicated ‘Rani Velu Nachiyar’ unit will be set up in the Tamil Nadu Police to ensure the safety of women.
  • ‘Kamarajar Kalvi Uruthi Thittam’ scheme to present $15,000 aid annually to ensure that no one drops out of education.
  • Free bus travel for women on all classes of state-run buses.
  • “Annapurani Super Six Scheme” to get 6 free cooking gas cylinders per year.
  • $2,500 monthly assistance for women, excluding government employees, until they reach the age of sixty.

Vijay is struggling with the divorce

Meanwhile, Vijay is facing a divorce case filed by his wife, Sangeeta Surnalingam, who has filed a separation petition after more than 25 years of marriage.

According to the latest update from news agency ANI, court documents show that Sangeeta initiated legal proceedings in early 2026 before the district court in Chengalpattu. Request for annulment of their marriage and temporary housing rights.

The case has been registered as an interlocutory application (IA) in the 2026 SMOP proceedings.

The petition was filed under Sections 27(1)(a), (b) and (d) of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, seeking annulment of the couple’s marriage celebrated on August 25, 1999. The application also refers to the registration of their previous legal marriage in the UK in 1998, prior to their wedding in Chennai the following year.

Besides filing for divorce, Sangeeta has sought an interim order allowing her to continue residing in the matrimonial home on Casuarina Drive in Chennai until the case is finally disposed of. She is a British citizen and currently has no other place of residence in India, the petition said.
