Authorities said Singh will remain in ICE custody while deportation proceedings are underway. These procedures determine whether a noncitizen will be removed from the United States.
Officials did not immediately share further details about the circumstances surrounding his arrest or when his immigration court hearing would take place.
This development comes amidst another Indian citizen, Jashanpreet Singh, in the United States. Last year, a 21-year-old Indian-origin truck driver with the same name was involved in a fatal accident in California that killed three people. In that case, Singh was initially charged with drunk driving after a crash on a California highway.
However, a toxicology report later cleared him of this allegation. In a press release published by CBS News, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office said: “Toxicology reports confirmed that none of the substances tested were present in the defendant’s blood at the time the test was conducted.”Singh’s family in India confirmed that he was a baptized Sikh (Amritthari) and did not abuse alcohol or drugs. The driver pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.Following toxicology results, the DUI charge was dropped and the case moved forward on amended charges. Prosecutors listed three counts of manslaughter with gross negligence and one count of reckless driving on a highway causing specified injury.Officials said the accident occurred when Singh failed to stop his truck before colliding with another vehicle, leading to a chain-reaction collision.
